Sweeney, a resident of Corning, New York, is a graduate of Notre Dame High School. In addition to his bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism degree from Syracuse University, Sweeney also earned his MBA from Binghamton University. He received his associate degree from Corning Community College, where he also played intercollegiate baseball for the Red Barons.

Since the 2011-2012 high school academic year, Denis Sweeney has served as the voice of high school sports broadcasting on NEWS TALK 1230/1450-AM WENY & GEM 98.7-FM.
The Syracuse University graduate from the Newhouse School of Public Communications has extensive experience as a radio sports broadcaster having fulfilled the play-by-play broadcasting duties for several Elmira-Corning, New York area radio stations. Sweeney has called over 390 high school football, basketball, and lacrosse games for several local media, Cornell University Collegiate Spring Football League action for the Ivy League Network, and Elmira College men's and women's college basketball games for the Empire 8 Conference and RLM Sports since he began broadcasting nearly 40 years ago.
